Can we give a round of applause for Will Poulter’s brilliant cameo?

The Bear made me feel again.

I finished watching The Bear, and it’s been a while since I felt “awakened”.

There were moments in the show where I felt the anger and disconnection the characters felt from one another was exaggerated. Except, it wasn’t. It was my visible discomfort about belonging to a dysfunctional family and seeing it on the big screen which made me feel this way.

We’ve all been there. Where we’re convinced we can connect with an individual but the words come out all wrong, and the stubbornness to misunderstand deepens, and deepens.

We’ve all been there. Where we know we’re being the asshole, but we can’t seem to stop it because it’s our safe “Act”. Be the shithead people tip-toe around, persevere in being a difficult person, and maybe you’ll stop feeling defenseless.

We’ve all been there. Where we love but cannot say it. We do not know how to show it. So we find ways to show it through. Whether it’s trying to lift the burden off of someone’s shoulder, or cooking them a meal when they’re upset.

We’ve all been there. Wanting to get to the top. We all want the glory, the success, and the right to feel so damn good in our skin. We all want Richie’s redemption, and Syndey’s lust for creation, and an Uncle Jimmy who saves us when we’re in the deep end.

We’ve all been there. Where we’re convinced we’re alone and on our own. When, in fact, we’re quite transparent, like Carmy.

For now, I need to sort my life out. So, you can find me reading Leading with the Heart: Coach K’s Successful Strategies for Basketball, Business, and Life.
